Corinth
Corinth is
located in the quiet, wooded hills of northeast Mississippi,
and the sweet aroma of honeysuckle is one of the first things
visitors notice when they come into town.
The city of Corinth was one of the most sought-after prizes of the Civil War
because of its strategic railroad junction. Now Corinth is one of the most
enjoyable hometowns in the South. That has little if anything to do with the
railroad - its charming residents make Corinth one of the most pleasant places
in Mississippi.
Remnants of the Battle of Corinth are scattered throughout the area, and the
town's rich history can be seen in the local architecture, battlesites and
museums. Union and Confederate troops clashed at nearby Shiloh National Military
Park while trying to gain control of the railroad. The Battery Robinette was
used as an inner line of defense by the Union Forces, and a fierce battle there
left almost 2,000 dead and 7,500 wounded. Its breastworks have been restored,
and markers point out burial and historical sites. The Curlee House was used
as headquarters by both Union and Confederate generals and now operates as
a museum.
Nearby Pickwick Lake on the Tennessee River is a great place to enjoy the natural
surroundings. It has 41,000 acres for boating and fishing, islands that make
great campsites and even a couple of waterfalls. The Aqua Yacht Harbor has
600 covered and uncovered boat slips and has dry storage facilities for craft
up to 30 feet.
There are also four state parks with cabins, campgrounds and hiking trails.
Golfers will spend less time riding and more time driving thanks to 10 golf
courses within 30 minutes.
Magnolia Regional Health Center serves the Alcorn area with 41 physicians practicing
19 specialties and offers a wide range of state-of-the-art diagnostic and treatment
capabilities.
The award-winning Corinth Theater-Arts performs musicals, comedies and dramas,
and the Corinth Arts Council books touring orchestras and shows to perform
in town throughout the year. The Coliseum Civic Center is listed on the National
Register of Historic Places and is just one of the venues where Corinth residents
are entertained.
The annual Slugburger Festival is held in July. Three days filled with entertainment,
carnival rides and plenty of slugburgers celebrate this not-so-beefy delicacy
created during the Depression. (Don't worry, according to locals there are
no actual gastropods in the recipe.) If that doesn't sound too tasty, there
is also a weekend of barbecue fun during Hog Wild in Corinth.
Annual golf and tennis tournaments and a 10-kilometer run will give you the
chance to work off all those slugburgers and ribs. The Magnolia Classic Walking
and Racking Horse Show and the Magnolia Antique Car Show also offer great entertainment.
Read what people like yourself have to say about Corinth:
When Jay and Josephine Derrick decided to retire, they hit the Beltway and left Maryland for Corinth.
Mississippi Living: What brought you to Mississippi?
The Derricks: Corinth is such a lovely small city – exactly the kind of place where we always wanted to live. Jay can hunt and fish to his heart's content, and I can drag him to all sorts of cultural events. That big tax break didn't hurt, either.
Mississippi Living: What strikes you most about living in Corinth?
The Derricks: Both the state and town are so beautiful. Everything's green – trees and creeks are everywhere. The people are just as beautiful. We've never met so many friendly folks, and they were unbelievably helpful in getting us settled.
Mississippi Living: Have you found anything you didn't expect?
The Derricks: We thought there might be some aspects of big-city life we'd miss, but we've found everything we want right here.
